ItineraryDay 1 Hobart to Encampment Cove (2 hours hiking)
One hour drive from Hobart to the historic coastal town of Triabunna. We then take a boat across a short passage to land on a pristine, untouched beach on the isthmus of Maria Island. This is a remote and untouched area of Maria Island that many visitors never get to experience. Here we’ll enjoy a healthy lunch in beautiful surroundings before trekking to our camp at tranquil Encampment cove where your bags will be waiting for you and your tent erected. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the nearby convict ruins at the point which have wonderful panoramic views of Mercury Passage and the local bays. Freshwater lagoons on either side mean this is a good spot to see mobs of Forester kangaroo at dusk. In the evening we’ll enjoy a delicious, healthy dinner in a stunning, natural setting. LD
Day 2 Encampment Cove to Haunted Bay (6-7 hours hiking)
After breakfast, we’ll set off on a trek to Haunted Bay at the southern tip of the island. We trek past the world-class Reidle Beach with its gorgeous 4-km crescent of white powder-sand lapped by turquoise sea – The Lonely Planet describes this as “the best beach no one knows about in Tassie“! We’ll then head off into the forest towards Haunted Bay – a lonely port at the far south of the island framed by granite cliffs. This was once used for whaling and sealing in the very early days of European settlement and is now home to many fairy penguins. After lunch we return to Encampment Cove for a well-earned rest, dinner and a second night at this tranquil camp. BLD
Day 3 Encampment Cove to Darlington (5-6 hours hiking)
After a healthy breakfast we say farewell to our camp at Encampment Cove and follow the coast north towards Darlington. We stop for morning tea at a spot overlooking a beautiful secluded beach before continuing on to Maria Island’s famous Painted Cliffs. These patterned limestone cliffs have been carved by the sea and are surrounded by beautiful rock pools. After lunch we continue on to the World Heritage settlement of Darlington. Tonight we’ll be staying in a restored convict penitentiary and after a hot shower its time for a few celebratory glasses of wine and a delicious hearty meal! BLD
Day 4 Darlington to Hobart (optional 5 hours hiking)
On the final morning you have a choice of sleeping in and enjoying a lazy morning exploring the World Heritage settlement with its rich convict history and the nearby Fossil Caves or of getting up early to take part in one of Australia’s top 10 day-walks to the summit of Bishop & Clerk. The walk takes you through grasslands, open forest and tall woodland, to the rocky slopes of the summit with incredible views out over the Pacific Ocean towards the Freycinet Peninsula. We then head back to Darlington for a final lunch before being transferred by boat and private mini bus to Hobart Airport for flights home after an amazing adventure. B
